The Kwando is made for children, but it is definitely not just a floating toy. With this kayak, children can cut their teeth on flatwater and easy rivers by learning basic paddle strokes and skills. It has the performance and the features of our adult boats – just packaged in a size that a child can physically manage.

Paddle Cutaways allow for a full natural stroke without the paddle blade grazing the sides of the deck. Its sculpted seat is designed for comfort and with both feet together in the footwell, this kayak is ergonomically suited to a correct paddling style.

The 8″ Screw Hatch gives access to watertight storage in the rear of the deck, which, together with the Tankwell, provides sufficient storage volume for children to pack their own gear for single or multi-day adventures.

The Bottle Holder, located in front of the seat, ensures that a beverage is accessible. To free their hands, when they stop to chat or stand-up on the flat Stand-up Platform to pose for photographs, they can stow their paddle using the Paddle Rest.

The Kwando can be carried using the Handles positioned on the front, back and sides.

Children will develop a passion for paddling with a kayak that has been designed to suit their needs. The Kwando is easy to keep moving in a straight line, quick to respond to turning strokes and a pleasure to paddle.

CHILDREN

The Kwando is, without doubt, the best children’s kayak in the world. We have created a high-performance recreational kayak that a child can paddle – properly. It has everything that we, as adults, expect from a kayak in terms of speed, performance, agility, manoeuvrability and responsiveness. The Kwando can handle a variety of activities from flatwater paddling to river tripping to give your child a true taste for the sport of paddling. From very young to pre-teen, our Kwando kayak will be your child’s adventure companion until they grow out of it and into one of our other models, like the Tarka.

DOG FRIENDLY

The rear Tankwell has enough space for a small canine companion. If the dog prefers to sit, rather than to lie down, line the Tankwell with a foam mat to prevent their paws from slipping.

FLATWATER

The Kwando cuts through water like a hot knife through butter. With this kayak, children feel like they’re really paddling because they can move forward without exerting themselves. They too enjoy being able to move forward with speed. For parents, this means that you can paddle at an easy pace and you won’t be waiting-waiting-waiting for your child. The Kwando makes paddling good fun for parents and children.

FISHING

While the deck of the Kwando has not been kitted with our angling features, kayak fishing is definitely an activity that can be enjoyed from this kayak. Use the Tankwell and 8″ Screw Hatch to stow gear, and Stand-up Platform to hold tackle between your legs.

OCEAN

With the Kwando, visiting the beach becomes a whole lot more exciting than building sand castles and getting dug in up to your chin. Now your child can paddle on the sea too. Build up confidence and the maritime skills of reading currents, swell and waves gradually by starting out on calm seas. It goes without saying to always keep to swimming beaches where there are lifeguards on duty and to adhere to their instructions at all times.

OCEAN SURF

The Kwando has not been designed to do cutbacks and ride tubes but it will happily go out through the breakers and back in to shore. If you want to get into surf kayaking, check out our Dumbi kayak.

WHITEWATER

For an introduction to rivers and whitewater kayaking for children, you don’t get better than the Tarka. Flowing water and small rapids are child’s play for this versatile kayaks and should serve to whet your child’s appetite for more. Use the 8″ Screw Hatches and Tankwell to secure gear for overnight trips. If you plan to do trips and your older child has the skills for bigger water and rapids, consider one of our whitewater kayaks like the Usutu sit-on-top or Pungwe creek boat.

SUP

While we don’t recommend paddling the Kwando from a standing position, use the Stand-up Platform to stand, stretch your legs and enjoy a height-above-water view to check out your surroundings, while you’re out on the water

Vagabond is a small but very dynamic kayak company. The range of high-performance recreational and white-water kayaks are all designed and manufactured in-house on state-of-the-art equipment. The Vagabond team is made up of five partners. Together, they are the magic behind the brand – uniting their passions and skills and experiences. Between them, The partners have over 140 years of paddling experience!

The small South African town of Parys, on the banks of the Vaal River, is the place that Vagabond calls home. It is here that everything happens, from design, development and manufacturing to testing prototypes on the rapids and flatwater sections of the Vaal River.

WHAT MAKES Vagabond DIFFERENT

Vagabond is a kayak brand whose partners have a collective 140 years of paddling experience between them. But this doesn’t make the brand any different to many other brands created and run by kayakers. It is how and why we do things that sets us apart.

Easy-to-use, high-performance kayaks

Vagabond focus is on making high-performance kayaks that are easy-to-use. We want recreational paddlers to enjoy paddling well-designed and crafted kayaks that are suited to their activities. This means that Vagabond boats have speed and stability. Indeed, Vagabond boats are not just blobs of plastic dished up to the inexperienced as a ‘recreational kayak’. No, no, no! Vagabond believe that for social, casual and infrequent paddlers to really enjoy the experience of paddling, that Vagabond kayaks must be good. Very good.

Vagabond kayaks are so good that experienced paddlers (and their children) will love taking these kayaks on dams, rivers and the sea. Fast, easy-to-use and a pleasure to paddle, Vagabond is your first choice when it comes to choosing a kayak.

Launching a new kayak company with 15 kayaks

Vagabond launched with 11 unique designs plus four angler versions – that’s unprecedented! Instead of launching with a boat or two and adding new models each year, Vagabond had the pleasure (and pressure!) of being able to design and develop a full range in one go. The range has a consistent appearance and key features – like the Paddle Cutaways – are common to all designs. Our designs are all new and as such there are no old versions.

The best fittings on every Vagabond kayak

The fittings are the best that Celliers Kruger has designed – and he has designed many drain plugs, hatches, thigh straps and attachment fittings during his career. In addition to those fittings commonly found on kayaks, Vagabond kayaks also feature Celliers’ innovative Multifit, Scupper Venturi and Footrest fittings.

We do not have different grades of fittings for different boats. We have only one type of each fitting; the very best design of the highest quality. Every boat gets the same treatment; from the Kwando (children’s sit-on-top) to the double-seater Mazowe and the Vubu whitewater creekboat. Nothing but the best for every model.

Vagbond kayaks suit a specific purpose or fill a gap in the market

Worldwide, there are dozens of kayak companies. Vagabond is not looking to just put more kayaks into stores. With more than two decades in the kayaking industry, Vagabond has identified gaps in the market and have created kayaks for specific purposes.

With this in mind, you won’t see Vagabond launching a ‘new’ model every year where the only change has been to the colour of the boat. Instead, new models will be carefully considered and created to respond to a need in the market.
