Choosing The Right Kayak For You And Your Needs

Choosing The Right Kayak For You And Your Needs

Posted by Richard Hedges on

Choosing the right kayak for you is important and can impact your enjoyment and what you take away from you time on the water.

There are many different types of kayak on the market serving different purposes. You need to consider what you would like to achieve from your kayak and its primary use.

Are you paddling calm lakes, exploring rivers, or venturing into the sea? Different activities require different kayaks. For example, kayak fishing calls for a stable kayak with built-in rod holders and storage, while a tandem kayak is perfect for family trips or paddling with a partner. Touring kayaks are ideal for long-distance paddling, offering speed and efficiency, and if you plan to bring a dog along, make sure your kayak has enough space and stability for a furry companion. Equally, kayak camping is a popular activity. Does the kayak have enough space for all of your camping gear?

Your height and weight are also critical factors. Taller or heavier paddlers may need wider, more stable kayaks to ensure safety and balance, while lighter paddlers may feel comfortable in narrower, more agile models. Stability isn’t just about preference—it’s about matching the kayak to your body to avoid tipping and improve control.

Skill level and comfort should guide your choice as well. Beginners often benefit from wide, stable kayaks, while experienced paddlers might prioritize speed and manoeuvrability. Material is another consideration: plastic kayaks are durable and affordable, while fiberglass or composite models are lighter and faster but can come at a much higher cost.

Another consideration is the storage and transporting of the kayak. Whilst kayaks can be left outside, is there enough space behind the shed or in your garage for a 4.3 metre touring kayak?

Are you able to load the kayak onto your vehicle roof?  A double kayak will be heavier than a single kayak. Are you able to lift the kayak safely?  Before dismissing a kayak based on its weight, there are products to assist moving the boats, whether it be a side load assist bar or a trolley to get the kayak to the waterside.

Our team at Cambridge Kayaks are here to ensure you choose the best kayak for your intended activities. We are happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Choosing the right kayak isn’t just about preference—it’s about matching your kayak to your body, lifestyle, and goals. With the right choice, every outing becomes safe, comfortable, and truly enjoyable.
